Why Choose Beinn Mhàbu
Nestled in the heart of the village Mabou, a cultural and physical place of warm beauty, Beinn Mhàbu offers something rare – an education rooted in community, culture, and belonging. Here, learning extends beyond the classroom and connects students with the living Gaelic world that still thrives in Cape Breton and across the wider Scottish diaspora.
A Sense of Place
When you step through the doors of Beinn Mhàbu, you become part of something larger than a school - you become part of a living community. Our campus overlooks the beautiful Mabou Harbour, surrounded by people who still carry the traditions, stories, and language of generations past. People here have a deep sense of belonging to place, people, and heritage. That’s what Beinn Mhàbu is built on.

A Different Kind of Education
At Beinn Mhàbu, learning happens through relationships. Our small classes and close-knit community mean you’re never just a number. Students learn by doing — through conversation, song, storytelling, and experience. You might study Gaelic in the morning, help host a ceilidh in the evening, and learn about local land stewardship from a community elder the next day.
This is education that connects heart, mind, and place, helping students grow not only academically, but personally and culturally.
Gaelic Language and Living Culture
Whether you’re brand new to the language or already on your journey, Gaelic is woven into daily life at Beinn Mhàbu. It’s heard in our hallways, sung in our gatherings, and lived through our programs. Language isn’t treated as a subject here, it’s a way of seeing the world, of understanding our relationships with others and with the land.
Through music, dance, oral tradition, and conversation, students experience the richness of Gaelic as a living, modern language of connection.
Life on Campus
We have a beautiful and historic building which houses our classrooms, dining facilities, common spaces, and student residences. Our new residence, opening in 2026, offers students a welcoming home. All student rooms have their own bath and small kitchenette. Community events and shared meals make it easy to build friendships that will last a lifetime. With beaches, hiking and walking trails, and local amenities all nearby, Mabou quickly becomes a place you’ll carry with you wherever you go.

Opportunities and Pathways
Beinn Mhàbu works in partnership with Cape Breton University (CBU) to offer diploma and degree pathways in Gaelic language, culture, and community studies. Graduates leave with confidence as well as credentials, ready to pursue careers in education, heritage, tourism, or community leadership, or simply to bring a sense of being connected to something meaningful to whatever path they choose.
